The moment I believed…

Short, skinny, wearing a pair of glasses, she looked just like a typical teenager in the class.   But she was the teacher for our Biology class. The topic was about the helical molecular structure of DNA.  She explained that it was composed of the familiar atoms of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen.  These particles exist in the universe since day one.  As it so happens one fine day they come together in a twisted formation. And there begins life.   Do they just collide in such a way at random?  What is the odds such a combination occurred? Is … Continue reading The moment I believed…

Challenge

Life, by its very nature, is challenging. Unfortunately, in our shame-based culture, we often receive the message that we should simply be able to get over all challenges and get on with life. If we don’t do this, there must be something wrong with us, we’re told—and we inevitably feel bad about ourselves. Pain, suffering, and tragedy are all aspects of life. This shouldn’t be denied. On history’s grand scale, humans engage in war and cope with natural disasters. On the personal level, a drunk driver crashes into our car or we lose a loved one to cancer. On a less … Continue reading Challenge

Sleep

Sleep – One of the most profound effects of a night of sleep is the improvement in our ability to remember things. To Sleep, Perchance To Learn Sleep is also a time when old memories can be modified and new memories can be formed. When the animals were awake and traveling around their cages, the scientists identified brain cells that became active only when the rats were in a specific location. During sleep, these same cells became active in the same order, indicating that the rats were reliving their travels and presumably strengthening their memories of places they’d been. The … Continue reading Sleep

Watch your thoughts

Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” ― Lao Tzu Each of us has a set of messages that play over and over in our minds. This internal dialogue, or personal commentary, influences our words, actions, habits, relationships and ultimately, in the words of Lao Tzu, the destiny of our lives. Too often the pattern of self-talk we’ve developed is negative. This internal seed of negativity causes a dark ripple that extends to all corners of our daily … Continue reading Watch your thoughts

Respect

Riley was sent to her room when she talked back to her father. This is the scene in Disney movie, Inside Out. If I lived on Mars and never heard of human culture, I might not know that there is no such a thing as respect for one another. This happens to be one of the basic element that enables people to bond with one another. Continue reading Respect
